Facsimile Print: Blessed Paisius Velichkovsky

Many people today know of the Philokalia, a compilation of mystical, ascetic texts from the ancient Christian tradition which contain teachings on unceasing prayer, interior silence, unseen warfare, and prayer of the heart. Few, however, know of the spiritual Elder who discovered these lost teachings after a painstaking search, and who devoted the rest of his life to disseminating them, putting them into practice, and helping other spiritual seekers to attain union with God through them. This man was Blessed Paisius Velichkovsky. Having lived at the beginning of the modern age, Blessed Paisius has supplied us with a blueprint on how to live like the ancient holy ones even while in the midst of the contemporary atmosphere of confusion, despair, and abandonment of the truth. Today his legacy--brought to America by monks from the Russian monastery of Valaam, and preserved and cultivated through the eldership of Optina Monastery--is more timely and needed than ever before.

The Notion Club Papers: With Rarities by Tolkien and Other Inklings

Tolkien not only created fictional meetings for the Notion Club Papers; he also created a fictional history for the manuscript of the papers. According to the papers, the meetings occurred in the 1980s; they even mention events that occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. About one-fourth of the papers were found among sacks of waste paper in 2012 at Oxford by a Mr. Green. Mr. Green published a first edition containing excerpts from these papers, indicating that they were written during the 1980s by one of the participants. Two scholars read the first edition, asked to examine the manuscripts, and then submitted a full report. The "Notes to the Second Edition" mentions the contradictory evidence in dating the manuscripts, and an alternative date is presented: they may have been written in the 1940s.  These papers remind one of C.S. Lewis' commentary to Tolkien's poem Lay of Leithian, in which Lewis created a fictional history of scholarship of the poem and even referred to other manuscript traditions to recommend changes to the poem.

From Tolkien is included; The Fall and Drowning of Numenor, The Athrabeth Findrod Ah Andreth, The Death of Saint Brendan,Leaf by Niggle, and Smith of Wootton Major.

From C.S. Lewis is included;  A Christmas Sermon for Pagans, manuscript fragments for Mythonomy, and what remains of what was once much anticipated Language and Human Nature (a joint work with Tolkien.)

Additionally, Et in Sempiternum Pereant by Charles Williams, whose influence is said to have inspired The Notion Club Papers, and The Froedi by J.R. Emry.

Available only from September 8th to the 12th.

New Release: Created in Incorruption

In his essay “Created in Incorruption,” Fr. Damascene of St. Herman’s Monastery in Platina, gives a detailed synopsis of the Patristic doctrine of pre-lapsarian creation, and the effects of the fall on mankind and the cosmos.

The theology of creation and salvation in Orthodox Christianity upholds the centrality and kingship of mankind while simultaneously embracing a cosmological vision that is largely absent in western Christendom. A common characteristic of all creation is corruption and death, and yet we are told that God is not the author of death (Wisdom of Solomon 1:13-14), and that all of creation awaits its redemption through the revealing of the saints (Romans 8:19-22), when all of heaven and earth will be united to God (Ephesians 1:9-10).

Man's body is closely related to its destined realization. As man is a composite of body and soul, the body too is called to submission to the Divine Logos, and through dominion over the irrational part of himself, divinity is mediated also to the body which thus participates in the attainment to the likeness of God. Man occupies a “middle” position in creation, straddling the division between the material world that we inhabit and the spiritual world of the angelic powers.

Facsimile Print: Russia's Catacomb Saint's by I.M. Andreyev

The present book is an offering to the English-speaking reader from the deep experience of Orthodox Russia in the 20th century. This experience is one that has touched in some way almost every Orthodox Russian, whether in the homeland or in exile, but it is something that is almost impossible to communicate fully to those who have not known it at first hand.
While an attempt has been made in these pages to give also an outward history of the tragic events of Russian Church life in the 1920's and '30's, the main emphasis has been to present as directly as possible the actual testimony of the suffering Christians themselves. This testimony, which often lays bare an intense experience of life in Christ, is the best gift Orthodox Russia has to offer to the West. It will not prevent similar things from happening in the West—one can already feel them coming towards us—but it will help us to face the sufferings of our godless age with strength and true Christian conviction.
May this testimony serve to wake us up out of our sleep of self-satisfaction and all-too-often pretended (or at least untested) Christianity!
Although the whole book was inspired by Professor Andreyev, only Part I, strictly speaking, was actually written by him. For the rest the editor bears full responsibility.

New Edition: The Orthodox Survival Course by Fr. Seraphim Rose

Our title, “Orthodox Survival Course” does not refer to physical survival, at least not directly, though sometimes physical survival is the outcome of spiritual and intellectual survival, as sometimes it is not, as in the case of the martyrs. The “survival” we are referring to is precisely survival as Orthodox Christians. Our purpose is to acquire an Orthodox philosophy of history, in order to understand our current situation in light of the Church's teaching, and thereby be better equipped to discern falsehood and avoid deceptive interpretations of what is going on around us, and to remain in the Church until death, to survive spiritually and to help those we are responsible for to do the same.

This new edition features improved edits, more footnotes, and pictures.

New Release: History and Critique of Old Calendarism

Since the early 20th century there have been groups which have walled themselves off from the Church concerning changes that were afoot around the world and in the Church. The leading issue, like the tip of a spear that sparked some to set themselves apart in resistance to these changes, was the introduction of a new calendar - often called the Revised Julian Calendar. The Gregorian Calendar, having been rejected over it's altered paschalion , was hybridized to keep the old calendar paschalion. The increasing tensions, including state persecution, lead this resistance to bunker down in it's convictions and lead the division to be solidified.  These in resistance are called derisively Old Calendarists. This volume seeks to be sourcebook concerning Old Calendarism. The perspectives included in this volume range from sympathetic to highly critical.
It is hoped that this book will promote understanding and dialogue in Christian Love by creating a greater awareness of the significance of the Calendar and of those who in accordance with their conscience make a stand by it.
